The Popularity Of Gaming Schools

Posted on 09 September 2008 by Admin

Gaming schools, they have been emerging since the early and mid 90’s. Today, there are even more gaming schools in the United States. They are now a popular choice for high school graduates who are skilled in computer programming and math. These schools offer their students curriculums designed to become a video game programmer which includes computer programming, a lot of math and physics among other subjects intended to equip the student with the tools and knowledge to design and create computer games. But why did these schools become popular in the first place? The answer is because of the video game industry.

Economy has been going down, not only for a few selected countries, but almost the whole world. The United States is one of those countries to be hit with economic problems; and because of that a lot of industries has been affected, especially the media entertainment industry. People are no longer willing to use their hard earned cash for entertainment. However, there is an exemption to this decline, the video game industry.

The video game industry has been thriving despite the adverse effects of economic decline. The video game industry has beaten the movie industry in terms of income by almost a billion dollars. Hit video games are in the level of blockbuster movies in terms of income. Rockstar Game’s Grand Theft Auto Vice City has sold more than a million copies in just three days of sale and made around $70 million. Another reason for the continuous success of the video game industry is the fast development of technology. Video games have evolved from simple toys for little kids to one of the major forms of entertainment.  Video game designers can now make unremarkable likeness of people in games. Take for example EA’s sports games have earned the company around $2 billion in a year due to the unbelievable likeness of the athletes in the game to their real life counterparts. With the rapid growth of the industry, video game developers are in need of more designers, programmers and video artists; and gaming schools can offer that to companies involved in game development. But, getting in these schools are not easy.

Entry in the video game industry, in the profession they love, is what a gaming school has to offer their applicants. However, gaming schools demand passion from their students, not just anyone can be accepted and not anyone can complete the rigorous course of understanding every aspect of how a computer works both hardware and software. Contrary to what others may think, making video games is not just a game, this means months of working on complex computer codes that an untrained human brain cannot understand. They apply math and physics in their advanced animation and computer programming. That is why passion is required. But after all is said and done, the pay-off for video game designers is great. Most of them didn’t choose to become designers because of the money which is incredibly tempting, but the love for video games.
