Thought Of Going To Video Game College?

Posted on 09 September 2008 by Admin

College Graduate, Major in Video Games. About a decade ago, if this was in your resume’ expect to be laughed out of the building in any company you apply for. No one would take you seriously and think that you’re just a bum or a geek with nothing better to do in your life. It seems like a joke from television. But today, things are very different. In the past, people had no idea what a big hit the gaming industry would become. Today, the gaming industry is the largest industry in the United States. One of Japan’s biggest exporters is also in the gaming industry, Nintendo. Before, they didn’t care about this but now Sony and Microsoft are among the top competitors in the gaming industry. They have seen the potential revenues of games because of the large market. The economy might be in a downward spiral but the gaming industry still prospers; beating in revenues and record sales the movie industry and other media entertainment industries.

Let us take the example of Rockstar Game’s 2002 blockbuster game, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This game was able to sell 1.4 million copies in just three days. With the price of each game at around $45 to $50, that’s about $70 million easy, this puts it among the movie industry’s blockbuster hits in terms of revenue and popularity.

College fresh graduates can earn up to $50,000 a year and double that if they were involved in creating a hit game. These facts and figures gave the idea to form a video game college.  Because of these certain collages, high school graduates who has a knack in computer design and those who want to learn designing and creating video games now has an option to go to a video game college and hone their skills in creating games. This gives computer savvy students a fighting chance to do what they love and in the long run, be able to join the world’s top grossing companies in the gaming industry.

Why is a video game college a better choice for aspiring designers? This is because the curriculum of other colleges and universities would not be able to deliver the proper balance of education for aspiring designers. A video game college would offer the student the proper tools he or she needs to join a team of game designers. Designers need hardcore training in math, physics, advanced computer programming and animation among others. This is not rocket science but game designing is just as difficult.

A video game college education offers high school students an option to enter the fastest growing industry in the United States today; and with more and more of these colleges opening, game designers would become better and better due to the competition involved in more people doing the same thing. This is a sign that the industry would keep on growing and just become better as the new comers become better and add to that the fact that technology advances in leaps. All I can say now for the future of the gaming industry is this, hold on to your seats.
